Storage comes first

Candy that looks like a familiar supermarket snack is easy to mistake for the real thing at home. Keep the pack sealed, labelled and locked away from children and pets, and never put loose pieces in a candy bowl. If a child eats one, call a poison centre or 911 right away.

Portioning a 500mg pack

Half a gram of THC in one pack means one handful can be far too much. Our team suggests treating each piece as a separate dose and cutting pieces in half if the package does not state a per-piece amount.

  • Start with one small piece or half a piece
  • Do not eat more for at least 4 hours; Health Canada says full effects can take that long
  • No alcohol with it, and no driving afterward
  • Health Canada suggests new users look for 2.5mg of THC or less; if this is your first edible, pick a lower-dose product instead

If you are pregnant, breastfeeding, on medication or have a health condition, speak with a doctor or pharmacist before using cannabis edibles.

Lower-dose alternatives

For something easier to measure, our THC gummies list the dose per piece. You can see every sweet on the cannabis candy shelf, or the full edibles range.

What to expect

Like every edible, these take time. Health Canada notes that effects from eaten cannabis can begin 30 minutes to 2 hours after eating and can last up to 24 hours. A common mistake is eating more because nothing seemed to happen in the first hour.

Plan to stay home, keep water nearby, and have a regular snack on hand so you are not tempted to keep reaching into the pack.

If you have taken too much, find a calm place to rest, stay with someone you trust, and seek medical help if you feel unwell.
