Why Purple Urkle has stuck around

Strain databases commonly describe Purple Urkle as a selected phenotype of Mendocino Purps rather than a new cross. That is why it has a reputation as a West Coast heritage purple. Leafly also lists it as a parent of newer strains such as Orange Sherbert.

The purple colour comes from plant pigments called anthocyanins, which genetics and cooler growing conditions can bring out. It looks great in the jar, but colour on its own does not tell you potency, so judge by smell and frost as well.

A good Purple Urkle jar should hit you with sweet grape the moment it opens, with a skunky base underneath. If the aroma is faint, ask us whether a fresher batch is coming in; we would rather you wait than settle.

Most people roll Purple Urkle or pack a bowl after dinner. The grape note comes through best in a clean glass piece or a dry-herb vaporizer at a lower setting.
