Ottawa Cannabis: Why the Drive to Bear’s Den in Kanesatake Earns Itself

If you are an Ottawa shopper looking for a Mohawk dispensary within day-trip range of Ottawa, Bear’s Den Cannabis is the Indigenous-women-owned shop at 1510B Rang Ste-Philomène in Kanesatake, near Oka, Quebec. We are not an Ottawa dispensary: we have no store in Ottawa and we do not deliver there. We are one shop on Sovereign Kanesatake Mohawk Territory, open since 2018, and we welcome visitors from the capital who make the drive.

A Mohawk-owned shop, a little over two hours from Ottawa

Kanesatake is a Kanien’kehá:ka (Mohawk) community on the shore of Lac des Deux Montagnes, and Bear’s Den is run by Indigenous women from here. You can read more about who we are before you come.

What we aim to give Ottawa visitors is simple: a calm counter, staff who ask what you are after before recommending anything, and fair everyday pricing.

Getting here from Ottawa

From downtown Ottawa, Kanata or Orléans, take Highway 417 east toward Montreal and exit for Hawkesbury. Cross the Long-Sault Bridge into Grenville, Quebec, then follow Route 344 east along the north shore of the Ottawa River through Saint-André-d’Argenteuil and Saint-Placide. Our shop is on Rang Ste-Philomène, the stretch of Route 344 just before Oka village. Some drivers prefer Autoroute 50 east through Gatineau toward Lachute instead, then south to Route 344.

Plan on roughly two hours to two and a half hours each way, depending on traffic and where you start; Orléans is usually the shortest run and Kanata the longest. Parking is free at our door. Get directions from Ottawa to Bear’s Den.

If you are coming from the Quebec side of the river, our Gatineau page covers that route.

What Ottawa visitors come in for

Hash

Our hash selection covers traditional styles such as blonde and red Lebanese, temple ball and hunter hash. Our team is happy to talk texture, aroma and how each one is usually enjoyed.

Vape pens

We keep a solid range of THC vape pens, from rechargeable pens to dual-flavour devices. If you are new to vaping, tell us, and we will suggest a simple device and one or two small puffs to start.

Edibles, flower and the full menu

We also carry edibles, indica, sativa and hybrid flower, pre-rolls, concentrates and CBD. Because the drive is long, we recommend browsing the full Bear’s Den menu and calling ahead, so everything you want is ready when you arrive.

Call ahead, then pick up in Kanesatake

Ontario and Quebec have different rules

Ottawa visitors cross a provincial line, so please know both sets of rules. In Quebec, the minimum age is 21, the public possession limit is 30 grams of dried cannabis or its equivalent, home cultivation is prohibited, and the SQDC is the only government-authorized retailer, as set out in Quebec’s cannabis rules. Quebec also has zero tolerance for driving with any detectable cannabis in your saliva.

Ontario has its own rules, including a minimum age of 19 and limits on cannabis in vehicles. In Ontario, recreational cannabis is sold through the Ontario Cannabis Store and authorized retail stores. Ontario says you cannot consume cannabis in a vehicle that is being driven or will be driven, and that transporting it in a vehicle is illegal when it is open and out of its original packaging rather than packed in baggage out of reach. Read Ontario’s cannabis laws before your trip home. You are responsible for the rules that apply to you on both sides of the river, and nothing on this page is legal advice.

Bear’s Den operates outside Quebec’s provincial system, under asserted Indigenous-sovereignty principles on Sovereign Kanesatake Mohawk Territory. That is our own position. We are not the SQDC, we are not part of any provincial framework, and we do not speak for federal, Quebec or Ontario authorities. Please never drive high, especially on a two-hour trip home.
